Simple Conservation Habits

Inspired by the Romance Divas board, here are thirteen simple habits you can form to conserve water, energy and the environment...

Thirteen Ways to Make a Difference from Gwen

1. Use rags and sponges instead of paper to clean up messes.
(Keep them sanitary by laundering rags and washing sponges in the dishwasher.)

2. Wait for a full load before doing laundry or running the dishwasher.

3. Turn off TVs, radios, and lamps in rooms you're not using.

4. Use a compost pile instead of the garbage disposal.

5. Don't drive somewhere within walking distance. (You'll get exercise too!)

6. Don't leave the water running when brushing your teeth or washing your face or hands.

7. Put an extra blanket on your bed and turn the heat down.

8. Put outside lights on a timer.

9. Switch to compact fluorescent bulbs.

10. Turn the heat/AC down when you're not home.

11. Take a re-usable cup to your favorite coffee shop.

12. Use a re-usable Nalgene or similar bottle for water.

13. Last, but most importantly, recycle.

Great list, Gwen. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Sounds simple, harder to do in practice. We've tried to train the kids right, but they're forgetful.

Happy TT!

So true! You can also sterilize your sponges in the microwave. Just make sure they're slightly damp when you put them in there!

Great list, and I actually manage to do many of these. To combat cold at night I put my cold feet on hubby. That works ;)

Whewh! I'm already doing everything except a coffee cup and that's because I never go out.

Great list, Gwen! I was raised to turn the TVs and lights off when leaving a room--mostly due to money, lol. And I hate the heat, so 55 degrees when we sleep is perfect for me. :)

If I turned the heat down at night I'd need at least 10 more blankets on my bed - but I do recycle, turn stuff off when not in use, and I use my own grocery bags. ;)

Hmmm. I don't do 5 and 11. Rats. I thought I was pretty good.

Great list! Happily, we found a washer that will adjust the amount of water to the size of the load, so we never have to wait if there are clothes we need washed in a hurry. :-) (It's a Calypso washer, BTW.)

I score 12,5/13! :P Only thing I sometimes forget is to turn lights, tv, radio out.

Another tip would be take a shower instead of a bath (or if you really want a bath don't use more than needed, so not filling it to the brim).
